Heels lose in first game despite 12 ks from White
Despite 12 strikeouts from ace pitcher Alex White, the North Carolina Tar Heels lost 5-2 to Arizona State in 10 innings Sunday in the first round of the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.

White battled through nine innings tied at 1-1 but Carolina's relievers couldn't withstand Arizona State's bats in the 10th. Reliever Colin Bates left with one out and one on and reliever Brian Moran couldn't stop Arizona State, which got four hits in five at bats, including a go-ahead single by Carlos Ramirez and a dagger three-run home run by Cole Calhoun.

The Tar Heels banged out 13 hits but only scratched on an RBI single by Garrett Gore in the sixth inning to tie it. Gore also committed a costly error in the 10th when he lost a fly ball in the sun. It was Carolina's third error of the game.

This is the first time during the four-year World Series run that the Tar Heels have lost the opening game. That puts them in an elimination loser's bracket game Tuesday at 1 p.m.
