Off the cuff: Carolina has life but nothing comes easy. The Tar Heels were the superior team at Syracuse but the game was tied with 10 minutes to play and the Heels led by just two with a minute left. There is no room for error. Which leads me to thinking about free throws. Not sure what's going on with that. The Tar Heels made just 15 of 23 from the line while Syracuse was 20 of 22. Ian Jackson was the scoring leader but even he missed four of the six free throws he shot. Cadeau missed the front end of a one-and-one and instead of Carolina going up six in the last minute, Syracuse hit it to a two-point lead with a pair of free throws of its own. Ironically, Drake Powell, who had missed four of his five free throw shots over the last four games, managed to hit two in the last nine seconds to thwart any chance the Orange had. Powell, while he only had five points over 25 minutes of play, had three assists and a pair of blocks - one of which was a highlight of the game. With the Heels up six with less than three minutes to play, the team came up short twice trying to extend the lead to three possessions. But then Powell blocked a shot in the lane which started a fastbreak for Carolina. Jackson got it and went in quickly for a layup on the other end to make it 81-73. A 7-1 Orange run over a minute and a half made it closer than it should have been. Carolina never trailed and kept the lead between seven and 11 points for most of the way. If they are going to go on a run, they need to put some teams away. |
