Off the cuff:

It was interesting that the Tar Heels, who changed their emphasis to perimenter play over post play, ended up getting creamed in the post as Purdue outscored Carolina in the paint 42-18.

Of course Bacot's foul trouble - mostly obvious and ill-advised pushing fouls in the lane - contributed to the disparity.

Carolina played well enough to win and played with enough effort to win but Purdue's runs and balanced inside/outside game was too much to overcome.

"We're talented enough and good enough to win every game," Coach Hubert Davis said. "I'm sad, hurt and upset they we lost but I'm encouraged about how good we are and how good we can be."

Undefeated Purdue, ranked sixth in the country, returns all five of its starters from last year with a couple of them now coming off the bench.

It was a tall order anyway and then the Tar Heels had to play without perhaps their best defensive player in Leaky Black, who was out with a non-COVID illness.

Purdue 93, Tar Heels 84
Carolina rallies, runs out gas & starters

North Carolina rallied from 10 down to take a lead midway through the second half but then seemed to run out of gas as sixth-ranked Purdue went on a 10-0 run to defeat the Tar Heels 93-84 in the Hall of Fame Tipoff Classic. (11/20)

The Heels were in foul trouble much of the game with two starters - Armando Bacot and Dawson Garcia fouling out. Bacot was in and out of the game throughout, playing less than 17 minutes and only going one of six from the field.

Garcia, on the other hand, managed to play nearly 34 minutes and scored a Carolina career-high 26 points, keeping the Heels in the game.

Carolina seemed to always be catching up after Purdue's Sasha Stefanovic hit four of four threes in the first 10 minutes of the game to set the tone. The Boilermakers hit seven of their first 13 threes to go up 39-29.

The Tar Heels cut into the margin and got within a point of the lead at 60-59 with under 12 minutes to go after R.J. Davis hit his second three-pointer over a 40-second span.

On a possession where Carolina got the ball back three times, Garcia drained an open three from the left wing to give the Tar Heels their only lead of the game at 65-64 with 9:15 to go.

But after UNC's Kerwin Walton missed an open three, Stefanovic drilled yet another three to highlight a 10-0 Purdue run.

The Tar Heels kept fighting as Brady Manek swished a three with 6:37 left to pull the Heels within a bucket at 74-72. But, yet again, Purdue went on quick run to push the margin back up to 10 at 85-75 with just 3:48 left. Carolina never threatened again.

While UNC hit 12 threes in 29 attempts, Purdue was not far behind with 10 of 23 three-point shots and the Boilermakers took advantage of Bacot's absence to outscore the Heels in the paint by a dominating 42-18.

"Their post players were dynamic," UNC's Caleb Love said. "(Trevion) Williams was the impact player of the game."

Purdue's Williams was saddled with foul trouble in the first half but came back in the second half to score 20 points in just 10 minutes, hitting 80 percent of his shots - all close to the basket.

In addition to Garcia's 26 points, Davis and Caleb Love each scored 18 points.

The Tar Heels, now 3-1, play Tennessee Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in the consolaton game.
