Off the cuff: Carolina withstood a lot in this upset victory at Duke. They were battling a story line of Coach K's career. They were battling an arena full of excited students and a bunch of celebrities.

But the thing that stood out to me was overcoming a 14-0 run by Duke in the first half. Yes, the second half was the defining time of the game. But the Tar Heels blew a 28-23 lead and trailed 37-28 after just three minutes of a Duke barrage.

A trio of threes in the last 1:55 by the Heels - from Love, Manek and Davis at the buzzer - drew Carolina to within a basket at 41-39 at the half.

Carolina hung in with tough defense and 59 percent shooting in the second half. It took more than 10 minutes in the second half before the Heels could wrestled away the lead. But once they did, they put their feet on the gas and won a big game - the biggest of the season.

If the Heels aren't in the NCAA Tournament now, there ought to be an investigation. The Heels are winning at the right time, having won 11 of their last 13 games.

Coach Davis said he told the team that for them to win this game, they were going to have to play with a competitive fight - "plant our feet, stand our ground and fight."

Caleb Love said that's just what the Tar Heels did. "We came in as the underdogs but we came out and competed and won it," he said.

Coach K, in addressing his former players in the stands after the game, said with a laugh, "We didn't play well tonight and there were times that you didn't either."

Tar Heels 94, Duke 81

Heels big 2nd half ruins Coach K finale

Everything was set up for Duke to beat the rival North Carolina in Coach Mike Krzyzewski's final game at Cameron Indoor Stadium. After all, the Devils blew out Carolina the first time they met this year and the Devils had wrapped up the ACC regular season title outright for the first time in more than a decade. (3/5)

Despite a week of sports media talking about Coach K's final home game - and a whole season of praising the coach - the real story is about North Carolina taking over the game in the last 10 minutes and whipping the heavily favored Blue Devils 94-81.

"This is forever," UNC coach Hubert Davis said. "This could be the biggest win at Duke in the history of Carolina basketball."

Down by five with a little more than 10 minutes to play, UNC's Caleb Love hit a three from the top of the key. Then R.J. Davis got a layup after an Armando Bacot steal and Bacot came up with a banked hooked shot to put Carolina up 63-61 with 9:15 to go.

In a game that had gone back and forth, and in a game that was close throughout, amazingly the Tar Heels never trailed again.

Duke got to within one at 70-69 on a three by Trevor Keels but seconds later Davis answered with a three from the right wing. A driving up-and-under basket from Leaky Black put the Heels up 75-71 with five minutes to go.

A nifty scoop shot by Davis and a sharp pass from Love to Brady Manek put the Heels in control at 79-71 with 3:53 to go.

It never got closer than five the rest of the way as a shocked arena of Crazies watched the Heels extend the lead to double digits on a Bacot dunk and wrap it up at the free throw line in the last minute.

Carolina only played six players more than five minutes. For what is believed to be the first time ever for the Tar Heels, four players scored more than 20 points in a single game.

Bacot led the way with a 10 of 11 performance from the field for 23 points. Love, who hit all 12 of his free throws, finished with 22 points. Davis and Manek, who each played the full 40 minutes, scored 21 and 20 points respectively.

"This is probably one of the greatest Carolina wins that wasn't a national championship,” Bacot said. “Just being able to shut (the Cameron Crazies) up and celebrate on their court with all their former players watching, it was great.”

Pablo Banchero, who chose Duke over Carolina, scored 15 in the first half as the Devils led 41-39 at the break but he was held to eight in the second half to finish with a team-high 23 points.

Carolina, now 23-8 overall and 15-5, may have earned its way into the NCAA Tournament with the victory, which gives the Heels a three seed in the ACC Tournament. The Heels play the late game in the tournament Thursday night.

Duke falls to 26-5 and 16-4 in the ACC and goes into the ACC Tournament as the No. 1 seed.
