Off the cuff: Armando Bacot hasn't become a liability. I mean he had 18 rebounds and blocked three shots. But he has hit just two of his last 23 shots, including one of 10 against Boston College.

Some of it is that Bacot hurt his shooting hand against Miami and has hit only about 35 percent of his shots since. He was shooting over 62 percent.

Coach Hubert Davis doesn't mention the hand as the issue preferring to say that teams are denying him the ball down low since his back-to-back 29-point games.

I suspect it's a bit of both.

To beat N.C. State, an up-and-down club that can get hot, Carolina will need Bacot to heal by Saturday or else the Tar Heels will need to shoot a lot better than they did against Boston College.

The Wolfpack probably would have beaten the Carolina team that showed up Wednesday night. But Carolina has a day off Thursday. Hopefully that will help them physically and mentally.

Tar Heels 58, Boston College 47
Heels shoot poorly but hold BC down

North Carolina held Boston College to just six field goals in the second half and overcame poor shooting to defeat the Eagles 58-47. (1/26)

Boston College failed to score a point over the last seven minutes of the game while the Tar Heels were on an 8-0 run (or maybe trot) to finish the game.

Carolina outscored BC from the free throw line by 14 points as the Heels went 20 of 25 from the line. But UNC's poor field goal shooting was historic as the Tar Heels shot the poorest they've ever shot in a winning game, hitting just 29.1 percent of their shots. The previous "record" was 30.3 percent in a win against William & Mary in 1957.

"I felt like we were tired," UNC coach Hubert Davis said. "We've had three hard games in five days. We weren't sharp but we found a way to win."

Coach Davis said his squad made stops when they needed to and made shots when they needed to. BC shot a little better from the field than Carolina but the Eagles managed only one three point bucket in 16 attempts. Meanwhile the Heels were a respectable six of 17 from the three-point line.

Caleb Love, who hit two threes, led the Tar Heels with 16 points while R.J. Davis, who was four of four from the line, was the only other Tar Heel in double figures with 13 points.

Armando Bacot, who has been nursing a hurt hand since the Miami loss, had a frustrating time getting the ball to fall as he was just one of 10 from the field. He did haul down 18 rebounds and blocked three shots.

Carolina led by as many as eight points in the first half but led only 33-31 at the break. BC could never catch up after the Heels scored the first four points of the second half. The lead stayed around five to seven points until the last minute when Tar Heel free throws boosted the lead to 11.

Second half highlights came from a couple of Tar Heels who rarely score. Puff Johnson and Leaky Black each scored on put-back shots after getting offensive rebounds to get the home crowd to their feet.

Quinton Post's 10 points led Boston College, which drops to 8-11.

North Carolina, now 14-6 and 6-3 in the ACC, hosts N.C. State Saturday. The Tar Heels once again were playing without Damon Garcia, who went back home to be with an ailing relative.
