Off the cuff: Two things beat the Tar Heels - free throws and rebounding. It wasn't the poor shooting from the field (only 39 percent). If they had gotten rebounds, they would have gotten easier shots on the offensive end and they would have kept Butler from scoring when on defense.

The Bulldogs scored 19 second-chance points.

Carolina's defense did hold Butler to just 31 percent from the floor but the Bulldogs drained nine threes.

Butler 74, Tar Heels 66
Familiar problems haunt Heels

Butler can be thankful for North Carolina's foul shooting and lack of aggressiveness on the boards as the Bulldogs used a second-half run to beat the Tar Heels 74-66 in the Atlantis tournament in the Bahamas. (11/26)

Carolina missed 14 free throws, including 10 in the second half, and were outrebounded 57-40 with 29 of Butler's rebounds coming on the offensive end.

The unranked Bulldogs quickly erased a three-point halftime deficit to take control of the game. The Tar Heels scored just seven points in the first nine minutes of the second half while Butler reeled off 17, including three threes, to take a 49-42 lead.

UNC's Marcus Paige, who uncharacteristically missed four free throws (he's never missed more than two in a game), hit one of two to draw the Heels within five at 49-44 before Butler went on a 10-1 run over the next two minutes to go up by its biggest margin at 59-45.

Carolina fought the Bulldogs and the clock the rest of the way, finally trimming the margin to one possession at 69-66 with just 37 seconds left on an old-fashioned three-point play by Paige.

But the Heels never scored again and Butler hit five free throws to wrap it up.

Butler knocked Carolina out of the Maui Invitational two years ago.

Paige, who hit just five of 17 shots, led the Tar Heels with 18 points while Brice Johnson added 11 and Isiah Hicks contributed 10.

The Tar Heels fall to 3-1 and fall into the loser's bracket of the tournament.
